Family and Parenting

babyyawning.jpgParenting is not for the fearful or faint of heart. It certainly doesn't come naturally, and it has a rather steep learning curve. There is no how-to manual. Each child is unique. We often feel as though we are stumbling along, not quite sure of how to go about it. But on the whole, we do manage and we come out the other end as stronger, more resourceful individuals.

On this journey, sometimes we need outside help. Sometimes we need the support of our community. Click on these links to find information that can help you navigate this path.

LGBTQ Parenting Connection

A network of organizations supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer parents, their children and their communities.

The LGBTQ Parenting Connection emerged as a collaboration between the original LGBT Parenting Network founded by the Family Service Association of Toronto (FSA) in 2001 (now Family Service Toronto–FST), and Queer Parenting Programs at The 519 Community Centre (The 519). With new funding in March 2006 from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the LGBT Parenting Network was moved from FSA to the Sherbourne Health Centre in March 2007 and renamed the LGBTQ Parenting Network.

Children's Mental Health

"What are mental health problems? Why would my child have mental health problems? She is certainly not crazy."

Having a mental health problem does not mean that you are crazy. But the concept of mental health still carries with it a certain stigma, an admission of weakness and of failure. Particularly when it affects our children, we as mothers will often take on the guilt of not having been a good parent.

The truth of the matter is that mental health problems affect everyone at one time or another. Mental health problems are simply problems that relate to our behaviour, emotions and relationships. For the most part we can grow and learn from these problems. We don't always need specialized mental health services, but sometimes we do. It takes a strong and resilient parent to seek out the services of a mental health professional for their child. The link below will help you navigate the children's mental health system a little easier.

She may have a learning disability which requires some bridging work on the part of parents, educators, family and friends.
